To answer your question, I use internal 2 gallon division board feeders
with wooden tops and nylon tubular 'ladders' and I can see immediately upon
opening the top of a hive evidence of no feeding - a full feeder and dead
bees floating in the top of the feeder a week or more after the
last feeding. This is the major symptom I see, though I would count
dwindling populations, 'dinks', and 'greasy looking bees and frames too.
Not very scientific, but my observations.
