This sounds a lot like some of the nasty black bees that used to inhabit the
swamps of southeastern USA. I always assumed they were descendents of
northern European black bees. Occasionally we'd see a colony that could kill
a person, if he didn't have protection.
The mites have pretty much eradicated these remnants, though - perhaps one
good thing we could say about the parasites.
