If you have a ropy sample, you have more than enough to culture AFB in a dish, which is how they do it. I have met Bart Smith at Beltsville, and I am confident he runs a top notch operation. Be that as it may, I never doubted that I could diagnose AFB, but after sending many hundreds of samples, I am sure I can. Lab tests are just a legal requirement, I had plenty of bonfires without waiting for lab results.
