it wasn't clear in your original message whether you were being critical of prescriptions in general, or walt's in particular.
the 60 page manuscript (not published, but available directly from walt) is mostly about understanding and timing, and has absolutely nothing to do with spreading brood around.
checkerboarding is simply using empty comb to break up the solid honey dome above the brood nest.
the title of walt's the manuscript is "nectar management, principles and practices", and it is the best description i have read of colony dynamics during the transition from winter to spring and through swarming season.
were i teaching a class in beekeeping, this would be 'prescribed' reading. the principles are universal, but the technique is not applicable to those running double deeps.
