Take a look at the July, 2010 Bee Culture. Mel Disselkoen wrote an
article titled "Artificial Supercedure." He uses the brood break alone
as a mite control. He uses it for other reasons, but the concern here
is mite control.
I am in Alaska and have trouble wintering bees - a whole different topic
- but when I was able to get the queens I needed to last out our
extended winters I maintained one hive for seven year with no treatment
beyond the brood break. I would love to see this concept really
tested. It worked for me and it worked for Mel Disselkoen. Will it
work for others? I don't know how useful it might be for you big guys,
but I see a lot of potential for smaller operations, and for hobbyists
like me.
