I did not mean to imply that that was the range, but rather the average, according to Latreille. Which agrees with work done by Marla Spivak in Central America. They used natural comb cell size to differentiate between local Apis mellifera, which have been there for centuries (and seldom are housed on foundation) and the invading african bees, which build much smaller cells, about 4.9 mm average. The range is not at issue here.
