Looking into the feasibility of
selecting for VSH, and have a
few questions.
Concerning VSH and Hygienic
Behavior, definitions are not
distinct.
I previously assumed VSH was
hygienic behavior tested specific
to varroa. But this link suggests
they are the same, and one may
conclude 'nothing specific about the
trat',
From Penn State:
http://www.extension.org/pages/30361/varroa-sensitive-hygiene-and-mite-reproduction
"VSH is very similar or the same as hygienic behavior that
honey bees use to combat American foulbrood..."
If VSH is distinct from Hygienic Behavior, what
in your opinion makes it distinct?
Do breeders typically test for hygienic behavior
and call it VSH or are there special selection
criteria specific to VSH?
I see that one criteria of VSH seems to be
testing the amount of varroa infested brood
removed from the cells. But what if you have
no brood that is 'infested' which can be
inserted into VSH colonies? ARE you out
of the 'game' when it comes to selecting for VSH?
Thanks
Joe
