Dear Peter,
My company, Vita (Europe) Limited has been working with a research team from the University of Thessaloniki, Greece for some years, on the combatting the problem of Vespa velutina and other hornets. Much of the work has been done in France, where a modified and patented trap, developed by Professor Ifantidis, fitted to the hive has proven very effective in reducing populations of V. velutina. The nests of these Asian hornets are huge - much bigger than those of European hornets, or of any other that I have seen. With multiple queens and a constant hunger for bees as food, these hornets have devastated beekeeping in parts of France. It's a far more dramatic effect than Varroa even.
We have some good data from these experiments over the years and from others in Greece and Cyprus and we are now looking to manufacture the trap. The problem is finding a manufacturer who can do it at a reasonable cost. When we have settled this, we will post news.
Best regards,
Max Watkins
