I believe the nectaries are on the stalks.
Cotton is a relative newcomer in my parts and just happens to be in
bloom at the moment. I have observed bees foraging it and in the past
have gotten modest crops from it. I have no idea what variety they grow
here though.
Perhaps another motivation for discouraging nectar production is
moisture conservation?
