One of my favorite quotes, which is a prophecy
of sorts, is from one of the all time greats in
beekeeping.
Pellett, Frank Chapman 1879-1951.
Prior to becoming famous in beekeeping, Pellett
was admitted to the Missouri bar in 1905. Soon
after, this young Missouri lawyer lost a civil law
suit for a client — Mrs. William McKinley, widow
of the former president of the United States.
But this former attorney, who could find no
“contentment” in the law profession, gained high
praise for his “superior achievements in agriculture.
Pellet, a great conservationist, maintained a
honey plant test garden where he grew a large
variety of plants to determine their value as nectar
and pollen producers for honeybees and their
agricultural and commercial potential. He was the
managing editor of the American Bee Journal, and
wrote a monthly column called Postscript in the
Bee Journal describing his experiences with plants.
He wrote 11 books on bees, wild flowers, birds
and nature studies in general and hundreds of
articles on beekeeping subjects. His most celebrated
book was American Honey Plants, a thorough treatise
on hundreds of plants, which I highly recommend as
an absolute MUST have for all beekeepers.
In a 1947 interview with this celebrated conservationist
beekeeper, Pellet makes the statement:
“White man is the most destructive
creature on earth. In these centuries.”
“We got to learn conservation
. . . or we will commit national
suicide by the destruction of our
resources.” (Pellet, 1947)
Best Wishes
