Maryland has a dog that has been trained to detect AFB during hive
inspections. It's a black Lab and was trained in a police dog class using
AFB instead of the narcotics, explosives, etc. I've watched the
demonstration and the methods are the same as dogs trained to detect any
scent--detection=reward. It's used only when the bees are not
flying--frequently for inspections for out of state transport. It's
possible for the dog to scent inspect large numbers of hives much quicker
than opening and visually inspecting.
