Thanks bob.
Heres what I think I will do. I have gone through the hives collecting honey
the last few years. They werent glued up bad. I told my wife I am noticeing
some characteristics of them getting ready to swarm. So I rushed in and made
up some hive bodies with new foundation. luck would have it. when I sit the
first super down. one hive started to swarm and took off. It did settle down
on a limb not far from the hives and I got it back. so I was going through a
couple others that looked like they were going to swarm.
what I found was no queen cells but congestion. they were packed out. I was
switching hive bodies and adding new ones on when they started the
attitude:)
Usually i go through and tap a hive in the yard to see how they react. lets
say you had better do it quick:) they will boil out.
I will do as you suggest and split them down as I was going to do it anyway
to increase. I havent put any meds or strips on them in at least 10-12
years. these were left that survived the mites. No mites at the moment. I
did have some dinks for a couple of years and then they started up again. I
usually put up with hot hives because they give me more honey.. sure makes
me wish the starline were still available:) now that I'm not treating them.
I will start some queens out of the tamer ones, and see what happens.
thanks
dennis
