Below is a post from a member of a local bee organization down south. Thought it would be of interest to the readers here.
Mike in LA
"I attended the New York State Fair in Syracuse NY on Labor Day and got to speak with several representives from the Empire State
Bee Keepers Association who had a large display booth promoting both
bee keeping and the sale of New York State honey. There was one
encouraging note that came out of the conversation I had with members.
It was that they had sold ALL of the honey that was brought to the Fair
for sale prior to the final day of the Fair. This was the first time in
memory of anyone that had manned the booth in the past that this had
been done. I asked one lady who who was at the booth as to her opinion
as to what she could attribute the dramatic upsurge in honey sales this
year and she thought that it was because people are getting the word to
"BUY LOCAL" honey for both food safety and some people said it was for
treating their allergies. In either case it appears people in NYS have
gotten the word to buy local honey and I think that if this trend
continues to other states it will be a great promotion for bee keeping
in the long run. It will be interesting to see if honey sales increase
this year at the North Florida Fair and the follows the trend observed
in New York."
