I am in the midst of a Nosema episode and am trying to learn from the
experience. Our state lab does not distinguish species but I had one yard
with relatively high spore counts and I could see several hives not taking
feed last fall so I drenched those 'ringers'. I got busy elsewhere and had
one hive die and then probably had a general free-for-all rob-out of the
dead-out and the end result is a 70% loss in that yard. Stepping, back,
this yard is semi-shaded, on the damp side, and the darker bees seemed to
be more more affected. I am now spraying Fumidil and Nosevit over the top
and either the mix is working or the Nosema has run its course and hives
have stopped dying. I was dismayed to read that VPI could not even find
Nosema in Va. for one of their studies as I am just south of the border and
surely am not the only case? Does anyone have anecdotal advice on what to
do or how to avoid future outbreaks? I am particularly interested in
resistance or tolerance.
