In the northeast our 2010 season was very hot and dry. We hardly had a
nectar flow and the pollen is said to have been poor quality since the
temperatures were above normal for so long. I have been told and read that
temperature can affect the protein in the pollen. We had a very early spring
and record breaking heat most of the summer.
I kept pollen patties on all summer [Megabee] and fed most of the summer. We had a good flow of aster and goldenrod in the fall. However, I still had significant losses from all my new hives. Mite counts were below threshold, some with 0 mites [Medhat Shaker]. Did not treat for nosema, and saw no evidence of it in my dead outs. 5 frame nucs [single and 2 story] did best coming through the winter.
