Update: 
I replaced 4 laying queens by virgins till now and kept the queenless time short < 1 day. 
I decided to use no cage (no room for cages really and more hassle). What I did was comparable to what I do when making mating nucs, I pulled the frames out and mist the bees with water to make them relatively wet and disrupt normal behaviour. I then released the virgin in a corner of the nuc. I heard piping when I closed up and left and when I checked after 2 days I found 3 virgins alive, 1 I did not find but the colony was behaving calmly without the queenless sound. So up to now it seems feasible.
