Since I don't particularly enjoy being stung I usually wear a full bee suit 
with gloves when working in the yard. If I am doing anything requiring a 
sensitive touch, I take the gloves off.

I think it is important to put on a veil before doing anything that involves 
opening a hive. One incident stands out in my memory:

My nephew Bill and I went out to pull honey on a fairly cool overcast day 
with very few bees flying. We pulled up and saw a single bee fly out of a 
hive about thirty feet away. It came up to the truck, in the open window and 
immediately stung Bill on the eyelid. No warning, no provocation, nothing.

He was not able to do his regular job for two days with his eye swollen 
completely shut. About two hundred dollars down the drain. Better safe than 
sorry.
