investigators measured the maximum populations of hived colonies and found the following averages :
32,000 (NOLAN, 1925; date interpreted by SIMPSON, 1969),
42,000 (FARRAR, 1937),
45,000 (MOELLER, 1961)
27,000 (SIMPSON, 1969)
