Mr Henri CLEMENT is still President of UNAF (National Union of French Apiculture) and the position of UNAF seems unambiguous. Their press release for October 2010 states,” UNAF condemns the illegal renewal of the authorisation (AMM) for the pesticide CRUISER for the fourth consecutive year!
Once again the Government has favoured financial interests at the expense of pollinating insects and beekeeping. UNAF is outraged by the announcement of renewal of the AMM for a year of 350 CRUISER systemic insecticide as corn seed coating.
October 2010: UNAF appealed to the Conseil d'Etat (Supreme Court for matters concerning the state) for an application for the annulment of the decision by Bruno LEMAIRE, Minister of agriculture, to give an AMM for PROTEUS which was given to BAYER CROPSCIENCE France SAS on 15 August 2009.”

Letters to this forum constantly assume that Europe is England or some other nation and whereas the EU is 27 individual countries.
A scientific report, “Bee Mortality and Bee Surveillance in Europe” (CFP/EFSA/AMU/2008/02. Accepted for Publication on 03 December 2009), was submitted to EFSA (which is an official European Union body) One of its conclusions is that there is representative data for only 6 of the 27 countries that make up the EU.
Here in France there are no reliable statistics.
It seems that it is impossible to make any generalisation from such a small data base.
