I believe that the telephoto lens will take a shot that does the entire 
frame. It is just a matter of getting far enough away.  The reason for using 
the telephoto lens is to get a shot where the cells are all in focus - not 
to make them look bigger.

  With my very simple Canon SD1100 I can get a picture of an entire frame 
filling the monitor (with the optical zoom set at 2x) at a range of about 5 
feet.

You probably need a time exposure to get the contents of the cells to show 
up.
