I believe populations are flora dependent. In one yard, which is about 20 acres of abandoned crop land full of honeysuckle, aster and goldenrod I see thousands of bumbles. In another yard, which is more urban, I see a couple flying around the hives. Planting for bees would probably enhance population growth.
