I boil my water first, then after removing it from the heat, add the sugar and stir. Why boil? Because I want to cram every grain of sucrose into that syrup to make it easier on the bees and me. I'm feeding sugar, not water. I want to eliminate return trips to the bee yard.
When I've fed lighter syrups, yeah, even water from the hose (totally unheated) will dissolve some sugar if given enough agitation. But this syrup is not ideal for winter preparations.
A running argument in our bee club comes from those guys who complain they cannot afford to feed 2:1 syrup. So they end up feeding twice the amount of 1:1. Same amount of sugar and twice the labor and twice as many trips out to the bee yard.
I've tried over and over to explain it to them, but it doesn't seem to matter.
