I have consulted several members of the Bee Inspectorate and the best reply
is this one from David Packham:
"I have no published information on the colony loses in 1987. However I
was keeping Bees then and if I remember correctly there was an extremely cold
spell in January followed a further prolonged cold spell in April that
isolated the bee from there stores. Or in could have been the crash in share
prices or the great storm that course the losses."
