pathology / bee diseases / bee parasites. I did not know about the lemon grass
oil .... :)
Be very, very careful with the use of lemon grass oil. Last spring I split two
packages and used two more queens to form what I had hoped to be four nuc
packages with queens. I thought I would make the sugar syrup I was feeding them
more attractive so I added a "couple of drops" of lemon grass oil to the gallon
syrup than I made up. As soon as the queens were released from their shipping
cages the entire swarm absconded, in all four cases. I was able to retrieve one
swarm because the queen couldn't fly and the ball of bees was on the ground
close to the nuc box. I am guessing that the strength of the lemon grass oil in
the syrup was way too strong for the bees to tollerate. Lesson learned, I
guess. Mike in LA
