I can add a bit to this debate ...
Some years ago I had an experimental type of hive that held ten frames
(not common on UK).
I found that you could split the ten frames into two groups of four and
fit a central divider to the box that was a syrup feeder of two frames
width, (there were two entrances available in the floors (bottom Boards)
that were used. A few extra boxes were used to 'soak up' the spare
frames. this was a bit like the modern idea of 'yard trashing'.
No notice was taken of which split had the queen until a subsequent
inspection. The four frame units seemed invigorated and would romp away.
