Thanks to Bob for the lowdown on basswood. I, of course, don't imagine for a second that basswood (Linden, Lime tree, Tilia) is harmful to bees. I disagree only on two counts. Bob says basswood isn't as good as clover. I like basswood the best. But that's perhaps because of personal associations. It was one of the first I tasted fresh from the hive. I also love buckwheat, which I suppose is an acquired taste. The other thing is: basswood around here (upstate NY) is notoriously unreliable. One year in four or five, most would say.
