ITS Latin name is *Varroa destructor* and it is every bit as terrifying as
it sounds. This tiny mite, no more than two millimetres long, has the
potential to bring down not only a honey-bee colony but the
multibillion-dollar industry that underpins Australia's agricultural sector.
''Australia will be a net importer of foods once varroa comes in,'' warns
Victorian bee-keeper Elwyne Papworth. ''We won't be able to keep up the hive
numbers enough to do the concentration of pollination that we do now.''
