I may have missed a point that has been covered already, but has any thought been given to the gathering by bees of guttation fluid? According to Cooper (The Honeybees of the British Isles) one of the characteristics that distinguish Amm from other strains is that they don't gather dew at dawn. Most of the honeybees in the corn belt not being Amm, it follows that they are likely to gather the fluid. Whether they gather it for hive cooling or dilution of honey probably isn't relevant as it would still get passed around the hive.
