This is the opposite of what I see. In the early days of varroa (1997) we
saw many deformed wings. Now I could go through 40 hives and just find
perhaps half a dozen at most.
Varroa levels are under control - but not exceptionally low. We have always
used thymol crystals for varroa control and do not therefore expect
exceptionally low levels.
We do, however, score colonies for deformed wings on a 1 to 5 scale (5=
none, 4= one or two, and so on). We never breed from queens with less than
a perfect score of 5.
