I "burn" my tool clean after being in a AFB hive. I had AFB issues 2 years
ago after coming back from CA. I mistook AFB for chilled brood in dead out
because when the hives were loaded in CA to come to WI the lids were not
nailed down and many hives had a long cold trip with no lids on. Those dead
outs were used for splits and that came back to haunt me later. While in WI
I am almost positive the hive tool was the spreader of AFB in each yard. I
always follow the same route opening each hive in a yard. When I had the AFB
issues when I found it in a hive the next hive in the route would also have
it. Coincidence? Maybe. When the hive tool is covered in wax and propolis I
place it in my smoker to heat and then use another hive tool to scrape it
clean.
