my initial thought was it is different ....   newsprint seems to burn better because it is lighter paper.  But what you are looking for is something to smoke so it may be just as good ....  need to test the concept :)   The only negative I can think of is if the shredder is also used for mechanically coated papers (glossy finish) since these are a bit more rich in chemicals but that aside I would be inclined to have a go and see what happens ...
