Juanse,
In this context an eke is an extension to augment the capacity of the hive. It is usually a simple rim of the same horizontal dimensions as a hive, used as a spacer, for example to extend a super downwards so that it can be used temporarily as a brood box; to use above the colony in winter (in UK) in case there is a chance of obtaining a late crop of ivy honey in wild comb - (it sets very rapidly and so is difficult to extract from framed combs). Peter uses his in the way that he described. People using Apiguard are recommended to use a shallower eke to give a beespace above the open container.
An eke needn't be purpose-built - often a simple super can be used as one.
