Capped brood is not a reliable indicator of loss. Whether environmental
(e.g. cold chill), queen quality, nutrition, pesticide, viral) - the queens
often make up for losses of early developmental stages by quickly relaying.
Pick the cells off the older pupal brood, look for similarity of age. If
its patchy, either the queen is a spotty layer, or the colony is losing
brood during development.
