Since they are carrying larvae and pupae, that means that it is definitely
their nest! Sounds like carpenter ants. They like the warm cavity, but
likely don't harm the bees. Carpenter ants secrete strong formic acid, so
when disturbed, they repel bees.
I just shake them onto the ground, and they generally go somewhere else (if
done in warm weather).
