>>A *strong * hive will find *in my opinion* pollen patties anyplace within the hive. In cold weather the *strong* hive will send a *leg* of bees to the feeder or pollen patty. A weak hive will not.

When collecting ferals, I get many combs packed solid with pollen. I stack these, Christmas tree style, on top of the inner covers with an excluder (the latter to prevent the queen from coming up and laying there), then a propped up telescoping cover to let light/air in from the sides. Within minutes, the bees come up through the inner cover hole and cover all the combs. The pollen gets eaten out in a week or two.

I do the same with feral combs containing brood. I don't practice installing collected combs in frames.

[There must be light and air entering the space above the inner cover to induce the bees to eat the pollen and not store fresh nectar in those combs!]

When emptied, the feral combs are collected and melted down.

Waldemar
