I have often noticed that colonies that have in the past been perfectly
well-tempered get a bit scratchy when they are 'thinking about swarming', long
before you see occupied queen cells. Maybe there isn't as much queen
substance to be passed around as they would prefer and this makes them
disgruntled before they take practical steps to remedy the matter.
