Did he make claims about the efficacy for Varroa resistance?
Hi Chris
Did he make claims about the efficacy for Varroa resistance? As far as I understand it, freeze-killing or pin-killing is a test that detects the non-specific kind of hygienic behaviour a la Marla Spivak which may have benefits for chalkbrood and foulbroods, but is not particularly useful for Varroa. VSH is not the same as plain hygienic.
There was a paper that compared the two, and showed that only VSH cleans out the great majority of pupae with reproducing mites. Did Prof Ratnieks say why he is not looking for VSH?
best wishes
Gavin
