When the formate ester degrades into formic acid, the associated alcohol of
the compound would likely also evaporate, and leave no residue.
Simply adding formic acid back would not recreate a formate, since you need
to do a dehydrolysis reaction, generally using sulfuric acid to pull out a
molecule of water.
