Buying in good strains is one path: 'husbanding' the strains by selection
of best for reproduction and culling of weakest is another. The second is
ultimately more effective, since it preserves genetic diversity where
replacement from large-scale queen raising tends to eliminate local strains.
The idea of a 'super bee' is something of a nonsense - the very best strain
will degrade at the first generation if it is not protected by proper
selection procedures.
