EFB is caused by nonspore-forming bacteria that are transferred throughout
the colony via housekeeper bees as they remove dead larvae.
"The larvae that die are normally outside the infective cycle, not being in
a position to infect others, as their corpses are taken from the hive by
the nurse bees. It is the lightly infected larvae - the ones that do not die
- that pass on the infection."
