Bees in demand for fruit crops
This year, more fruit tree growers than ever before will pay apiarists to
put bee hives in their orchards.
As it becomes more financially important for growers to have good quality
fruit, farmers have focused on improving the pollination of their trees.
Apple grower Robert Green, from Lenswood in South Australia, believes
there's a lack of native bees around.
And he says growers have no choice but to spend money and ensure their
flowers are pollinated.
"Good quality fruit is influenced by good pollination, and the only way
we're going to make any money at all is by having a crop of apples," he
says.
Whilst it's pretty hard to remember when we had a crop failure based on no
bees, you've just got to try to reduce as many of the risks out of it as you
can."
