Bee space has been around a long time for between frames for no burr combs and other and why 10 frames to a box, (even 11) and not 8 or 9 or other slid further apart to make messes. Same with boxes butting and joining and frames hanging. And by the way in nature who makes gaps on combs hanging several feet down, which is what smaller gap between top and bottoms of frames would follow. The bees go around the sides for the most part or up and down the combs.
