Good point you make. The sticky substance is on the tree most of the time, I
would say, in the various parts.
In San Diego, where I grew up, the source of most propolis is eucalyptus
trees. This exudes from cracks in the bark. It is reddish purple, very
sticky and stains badly.
I always thought that poplar is the chief source of propolis around here
(upstate NY). It tends to be somewhat more brittle than the western type I
was used to, but it stains just as badly.
