If the crop is in bloom and the grower sees no bees on the flowers, he gets
motivated. If he has had a poor crop because of poor pollination, he is
motivated. Some growers learn faster than others.
Varroa wipes out ferals wherever colony density is above some low threshold.
The ferals then come back, likely better adapted to dealing with varroa. I
believe the ferals can be wiped out again by overstocking the area with
colonies that reach high varroa loads in late summer and collapse.
