mmmm, i must admit i'm pretty skeptical of the whole carbon credit business in general. with that said, i'm not sure what you write above is making sense to me.
in the case of plastic, that carbon is already trapped in the petroleum used to make the plastic (and has been for millions of years). i can almost see some logic in "trapping co2", but there is no trapping involved in making plastic, as it's already trapped (or am i wrong?).
wrt wood, growing a tree and making something out of the wood does in fact "trap" carbon.
both require energy to manufacture.
