Dennis vanEngelsdorp has given the 30% number, as the average number of lost colonies that beekeepers encountered in the spring of the year for the last few years, and I believe he's accurate. The Sierra Club may include feral losses, which I don't believe can be counted. What's not included in the Sierra Club assessment may be that beekeepers do splits, grab swarms, etc, to rebuild from their losses.
We all know the Albert Einstein quote is a misquote of Albert N. (Bubba) Stein, the backwoods Kentucky beekeeper, who relies on his
honey sales to feed his own family and said, "If mah bees all dies, us'n are all gonna starve. Aint got much preserves in th' larder
that'll last more'n three years"
