Anyone know if the bees are releasing venom as well as pheromone in such a situation?  Inhaling venom is thought by some to have a role in precipitating later allergies.  Probably coincidence, but I became allergic to venom the spring after having to deal with the most aggressive colony I've had.  A possible second reason not to follow Joe's suggestion to stick your nose into the winter cluster when you see stingers in the air?!
