Complicating the issue probably isn't the path to a reliable understanding 
of the big picture.  I'm much more inclined to trust simple (easily 
understood), transparent facts to provide the most reliable 
generalizations.  Those generalizations may not take us very deep, but I 
think they probably are our most reliable accounts of the big picture.
