I use a single British National brood box with a queen excluder.  It is rare 
for a queen to need more room than this provides, but without the excluder I 
find that they will make the nest more vertical in shape by using the first 
super.  (...and before someone tells me that this will not produce enough 
bees to get a decent crop, have a look at the picture here:
