There is a hobbyist areound here who runs about a dozen hives and is on
her fourth year with no treatment other than 'drone trapping'. I
personally try to freeze 4 sets of drone brood per hive/per year. We
normally get a full set for each month, April through October (seven
months). I'd say I always get the first and second sets, which are the most
critical, but miss one of the next three due to other beekeeping pressures.
I do not have data, but have not lost a hive in August-October in several
years and, to me, that says something good about keeping populations down.
In the fall I have been treating with Mite-Away and this year I will add
Oxalic in December/January.
